5 Things to Keep in Mind While Trying to Conceive

Getting pregnant is one of the biggest decisions that you make in your life; you have to prepare yourself when you start trying to conceive. To help you out, we have shared the 5 things you need to keep in mind while trying to get pregnant.

Know the menstrual cycle

Understanding the timing of menstrual cycle is crucial in understanding when to conceive.

Do you have an idea about how female reproductive cycle works?

Do you know what is ovulation, how and when does it happen.

Are you aware in your cycle there are certain days when you are likely to conceive and there are days when there are no chances of conception.

Did you know that cycle length varies from woman to woman and can be anywhere between 28 days to 35 days so what works for one woman may not work for you.

Do you know what your average cycle duration is and as per that what are the days you must be trying to conceive?

So if you are trying to conceive but are not succeeding you might want to learn more about your menstrual cycle and get a better understanding on how it works. Visiting a doctor at this point helps lot as your doctor would explain your menstrual cycle to you and give you tips on how to plan your pregnancy. Especially in case you have irregular menstrual cycle where it will be more difficult for you to conceive.

Calculate the Ovulation Window

Menstrual cycle for every woman is different and calculating the ovulation window can be a bit challenging. Normally every month, a woman releases only one egg which, upon leaving the ovary, is viable for only 24 hours. This means that a woman is left with only about 5 days in a month to have intercourse that will result in pregnancy since ovulation is necessary for pregnancy.

So the time of Ovulation would vary from woman to woman and is defendant largely on the length of menstrual cycle.

Traditional ways to do this is to note early signs such as the cervical mucus which feels slippery during ovulation and looks like raw egg whites. But now a days Ovulation Apps can help track your periods and provide pretty accurate predictions after feeding in the data for 2-3 cycles.

Ovulation Apps do not work for women with irregular menstrual cycles. If that is the case for you you must visit a gynecologist for further guidance.

Have Regular intercourse every alternate day

1 or 2 days prior to ovulating is the best time to conceive, and timing this can seem a bit tricky. Increasing the chances of pregnancy doesn’t mean that you have intercourse every day. A couple of day's gap for intercourse works just fine as sperm can survive in the body for up to 2 days. Having regular intercourse every alternate day during your Ovulation window is recommended. Take Dietary Supplements

We can’t stress more on the importance of taking prenatal vitamin supplements before pregnancy right from the time you start planning for a baby. It is advised that a woman should start taking supplements such as folic acid at least 3 months prior to conceiving to ensure a healthy brain function of the future baby and prevent neural tube defects.

Lead a Healthy lifestyle

Living a healthy lifestyle is the key to a successful pregnancy. Both the couples must stay fit and stress-free as it helps women to produce healthy eggs. Often, couples may get stressed when they don’t get pregnant in the first few months. This shouldn’t be the case as most couples conceive within a year.

Men should take care of their reproductive health as well. When trying to conceive, men should lead a healthy lifestyle including a balanced diet, cutting down on alcohol, and not smoking. Making such changes will keep the sperm healthy.
